Snort 2.9.2 has been released

December 14, 2011

Snort this! In case you don't know what Snort is, it's an open source Intrusion detection/prevention system. (IDS/IPS) If you don't know what that means, it's a piece of software that can be used to monitor network traffic coming into your network to detect and block potentially harmful traffic. Think of it as a firewall on steroids. It doesn't just blindly allow a "type" of traffic and block the rest, it can actually inspect the contents of the traffic to block potentially dangerous content packaged to look like normal safe data transfer.

If your off-the-shelf firewall from your local computer store were a kids matchbox car, Snort would be the $300,000 presidential limo. Only it's open source so the price tag is a lot nicer to look at.
